The Münsterland is an area in north-west Westphalia and borders on the Netherlands in the west. Geographically and historically the region cannot be clearly demarcated. In general, the districts of Steinfurt, Warendorf, Coesfeld, Borken and of course the eponymous city of Münster are included. In any case, you will find a number of wonderful moated castles there, which are worth a trip and various photos. We have put together a very small selection for you.

Burg Vischering in Lüdinghausen, todays featured image, is the ancestral seat of the Droste zu Vischering family. Founded in the second half of the 13th century as a fortress for the bishop of Münster, it was rebuilt after a fire in 1580. Outside viewing is possible at any time free of charge.

Nordkirchen Castle is also called the “Westphalian Versailles” because of its size and importance. The origins of the castle lie in the early 16th century. Today the building houses the University of Applied Sciences for Finance of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Senden Castle was built in the 15th century and was later supplemented by further parts of the building. In more recent times the castle has had an eventful history with different uses. In 2014 it was even threatened with demolition, but this was averted thanks to an initiative of the Senden Castle Support Association.

The history of Raesfeld Castle dates back to the 12th century. In the middle of the 17th century, the residential castle was extended in the Renaissance style.
